History of Grimaud Castle
A medieval fortress, the Château de Grimaud has transcended history by going through various difficult periods such as economic and demographic crises, plague and war, which has designated it since the decree of December 27, 1996 as one of the most important monuments. most steeped in history in France. Dating from the 11th century, it is full of some of the most fascinating history that has left its mark on France. Located in the town of Grimaud in the Var department, this fortified castle was built by a group of inhabitants with the ultimate goal of protecting themselves from various attacks and threats during periods of crisis. The fortifications of the Château de Grimaud evolved over time and reached their peak during the 17th century. During the French Revolution, the castle was abandoned. Looted since that date, it serves as a stone quarry. His stones are sold at auction. Unfortunately, the dismantling following the revolution led to the destruction of the castle.
The great families of the Château de Grimaud
This monument was the main center of the Seigneurie du Freinet and sheltered many families. Its first occupants were the counts of Provence, then King Charles II and subsequently the viscounts of Marseille. The village rampart joined the seigniorial fortifications in the 14th century. In the middle of the 15th century the Grand Seneschal, Jean de Cossa, left his mark on the territory by founding the village of Saint-Tropez. Our hotel “La Villa des Anges” is located a stone’s throw from this magnificent, atypical village, just 30 meters from the beach. It offers you an exceptional panorama over the entire Gulf of Saint-Tropez. The last inhabitants of this sublime fortress were the powerful Castellane family. She settled there in the middle of the 18th century and expanded the estate by building two round towers and developing the east wing on three levels. The Castellane family then abandoned the Château de Grimaud during the French Revolution before fleeing to Nice. The entire estate and fortifications are, today, classified as historical monuments. As for the basement of this building, it has become an archaeological site.
